There’s many options for tractor tires on the market, but it seems like you really only see few main options on most machines. Most OEM manufacturers like John Deere and Kubota really don’t have much variety to offer and so you might have to go aftermarket to find the right tires for your machine. There really doesn’t seem to be a lot of information about the benefits and drawbacks of different tread patterns. Hopefully this video provides some valuable insight into the strengths and weaknesses of different tractor tire tread patterns that are available on the market.
First, let’s review the standard options. R4 Industrial tires are the wide, flat bar tires that migrated over from the heavy construction equipment industry. Generally viewed as an all-purpose tire with great tread life and somewhat considered a staple in the compact tractor market. R3 Turf tires are going to be your standard lawn and garden variety and if mowing is a primary task without much need for tackling off-road projects, then these could be a good option to consider. R1 Agricultural tires are what you see farmers using whether plowing, planting, or harvesting. When you think of a farm tractor, you picture it with these tires.

A couple of less popular options (I predict these will grow significantly in market share in coming years) are hybrid radial tires including the Carlisle Versa Turf, Goodyear R14, and Galaxy Pro R3+. A somewhat similar tire pattern is the bias HDAP (Heavy Duty All Purpose) which is found on a lot of high end garden tractors with similar patterns found on ATV’s and UTV’s.
